Red Light Therapy

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in North America. The Espansione Group has announced the publication of the 6-month milestone results of the DRUSEN Study, part of the LightWave I multicentric clinical trial, which investigates the use of Light Modulation® Low-Level Light Therapy (LM® LLLT) for patients with Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (dAMD). The study, published in the September issue of Springer’s Ophthalmology & Therapy Journal, demonstrated the safety, tolerability, and short-term efficacy of LM® LLLT in dAMD patients.
Key findings include:
A significant improvement in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) in the PBM-treated group, with 20.3% of patients gaining five or more letters compared to 8.9% in the sham group (p=0.043).
A significant reduction in drusen volume in the PBM-treated group compared to the control group (p=0.013).
The study involved 152 eyes from 76 patients and is part of ongoing research to slow AMD progression and prevent its advanced stages. Prof. Enrico Borrelli, lead investigator from the University of Turin, highlighted the importance of the study in improving the understanding of light therapy in managing retinal degeneration.
